Went to Big O Tires to get a flat fixed this morning. The lady working the counter was ridiculously Texan — her name was even Tammy. I love it.

New Keyboard
Susie got me one of the spiffy aluminum Apple keyboards that come with the new iMacs for Christmas (the wired version). I waited until now to break it out because I though that if they announced something earth-shattering at MacWorld I might be replacing my iMac, but that didn’t happen. Anyway, I opened the keyboard this afternoon and have been using it for several hours, and absolutely...

At long last, I finally found good Tex-Mex in LA! On The Border is fucking amazing, at least compared to anything else you can get here. Tonight I stuffed myself until I felt sick, and it was great.

'Futurama' -- The Geekiest Show on TV →
Love this quote: Cohen refers to a One Percent Rule that guided the writing on Futurama. When they were scripting the episode “Kif Gets Knocked Up a Notch,” a character claims that he painstakingly programmed a holographic simulation using “4 million lines of BASIC.” One writer pointed out that 99 percent of the audience wouldn’t get the reference to an old...

Your Creation Museum Report →
I absolutely love this quote: And thus we learn fascinating things. Did you know, for example, that Adam is responsible not only for the fall of man, but also for the creation of venom? It didn’t exist in the Garden of Eden, because, well. Why would it? Weeds? Adam’s fault. Carnivorous animals (and, one assumes, the occasional carnivorous plant)? Adam again. Entropy? You guessed it: Adam. Think...

MRI Movie
Tomorrow I’m going to have an MRI taken of my head for a speech production experiment. I’ll get a picture of my brain, and will apparently be given time at the end to say whatever I want and have a movie made of it, like the ones on the left side here. USC is one of the few places (the only place?) that are currently able to make such videos; it’s pretty cool. Anyway, the...

Google Image Labeler →
I hadn’t seen this before; pretty interesting. Google is using humans to help tag images and improve image search results. And they’ve turned it into a game where you get points, which is actually kind of addictive.

Has anybody tried screen sharing in Leopard yet?
I’ve tried it twice with Adam, and it seems to work seamlessly through our firewalls, which is seriously cool. Any idea how that is done? The visual quality isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely good enough for what it’s intended for. And we discovered that the minimize-text-edit-window-in-slow-motion-then-kill-the-dock-and-enjoy trick works over screen sharing, too.

Apple Needs a Nikon →
My feelings about Apple products summed up well by John Gruber: […] much of what gets chalked up as devotion to/obsession with Apple is, in fact, devotion to/obsession with great design, and there’s an utter dearth of rival PC or handheld gadget makers that value design as Apple does.

Beta test potato chips. Kettle sends you a pack of 5 limited edition flavors, and you vote on the one they should keep. It’s like a reality show where the goal is to get fat. I’d totally do this, except $15 is a bit steep I think.

Tumblr
I haven’t updated my blog in quite awhile; it just seems like too much of a chore when there are so many other things vying for my time and attention. I guess the root of the problem is that I feel like I need to write an essay each time I make a post. So anyway I’m trying out Tumblr, which aside from the silly name is looking pretty awesome and seems like it might be the perfect...
