When they were scripting the episode “Kif Gets Knocked Up a Notch,” a character claims that he painstakingly programmed a holographic simulation using “4 million lines of BASIC.” One writer pointed out that 99 percent of the audience wouldn’t get the reference to an old programming language. Producer-writer Eric Kaplan responded, “Fuck them!” As long as it doesn’t derail the enjoyment of the 99 percent, Futurama will make a joke tailored to the nerdiest 1 percent of its audience. “That 1 percent becomes a fan for life,” says Cohen.
